Dogs
We love our dogs and we have lots of them in just about every shape, size & breed.
This page is for dog owners, and especially for those visiting us with their dogs.
What's expected.

Pick up your dog's poop. If you're visiting, you may think we're a wee country town that doesn't mind seeing dog shit around. We do! Whether you're on a bush walk, the beach or the street, pick it up! That includes in the dunes. If your dog is loose on the beach, you're expected to keep an eye on it. If for some (stupid, honestly) reason you don't have a poop bag, find a leaf, a stick, a wrapper or a tissue, and collect it up and place in one of the many bins we have around town.

Long Beach is a great place to exercise your dog. If your dog isn't resident here, our dogs (some of whom think the beach is theirs) may see your dog as an intruder. Please exercise caution when your dog is a visitor. Not all our dogs want to make new friends.
-
Most shops and eateries don't allow dogs inside. Please ask first and don't be offended if the answer is 'no'. Some of our dogs have privileges in this regard that aren't necessarily extended to visitors.
-
Dog treats & water - some shops have dog treats: Stand Out cafe & deli, Colonial Liquor. There are plenty of water bowls around: Traders Mall has 2-3, outside the Four Square, and others.

Kiwi live here. As do wekas and other native birds. Your dog should not be off-lead in bush areas.
Dog Walks
In summer months, please only walk your dog on beaches in the early morning and late afternoon/evening.
Many of our walks are strictly NO DOGS ALLOWED because of our native bird populations. Northland has the biggest kiwi population in New Zealand and we want to keep it that way.
More info to come on other dog walks.
